Understanding Commission Calculations
Paying your sales team accurately and on time is a big deal — but manually crunching commission numbers across dozens of projects gets old fast. BuilderMate auto-calculates sales commissions based on real project financials, so you always know exactly what's owed and why.
Who Can Access This
- Admin and Team Member — Full access to view all commissions, filter by employee, and review breakdowns.
- Field User — Can access the Commissions page but only sees their own commissions (automatically filtered). They do not see the employee filter dropdown, and the Commissions tab on the project detail page is hidden from them.
- Commission User — External commission-only access.
Getting to Commissions
Navigate to Commissions from the sidebar. You'll see two tabs: Project Commissions and Standalone Commissions.
How Commission Math Works
For each salesperson on each project, BuilderMate runs through this calculation:
- Project Revenue = Project Price + Approved Change Order Amounts
- Salesperson's Lead Cost = A per-salesperson cost deducted before the commission is calculated. This can be a fixed dollar amount or a percentage of the project price. Change orders have their own separate lead cost. You set this when creating or editing the project.
- Project Expenses = Total supplier invoices and expenses recorded on the project.
- Net Amount = Revenue − Salesperson's Lead Cost − Expenses
- Commission Pool = Net Amount × 50% (the company keeps 50%, and the salesperson pool is 50%).
- Stake Ratio = The salesperson's stake percentage divided by the total stake (this matters when two salespersons are assigned).
- Commission Amount = Commission Pool × Stake Ratio
That's the full formula. Every time project financials change — a new expense is logged, a change order is approved, or the project price is adjusted — the commission recalculates automatically.
Split Commissions Between Two Salespersons
A project can have up to two salespersons assigned. When that's the case, each one has:
- Stake Percentage — For example, Salesperson 1 gets 60% and Salesperson 2 gets 40%. The stakes must total 100%.
- Individual Lead Cost — Each salesperson's lead cost is deducted independently.
Each commission is calculated separately using their own lead cost and stake ratio, so the math stays clean even with a split.
The Project Commissions Tab
This is where you'll spend most of your time. It shows auto-calculated commissions with columns for:
- Project Name
- Salesperson
- Commission Amount
- Amount Paid
- Remaining
- Status
Use the filters at the top to narrow things down:
- Employee dropdown — Select a specific salesperson or view all.
- Status — Filter by Pending, Partial, or Paid.
- Date Range — Focus on a specific time period.
Commission Statuses
- Pending — No payments recorded yet.
- Partial — Some payment has been made, but a balance remains.
- Paid — Commission fully paid out.
Standalone Commissions
The second tab, Standalone Commissions, is for manual commission records that aren't tied to a specific project. This is useful for one-off bonuses, referral fees, or any commission that doesn't flow from the standard project calculation.
Good to Know: Field Users won't see the employee filter dropdown on the Commissions page — they're automatically shown only their own commissions. This keeps things simple for your sales team while protecting data across your organization.
